This paper is the result of a research done among afro-brazilian religion and samba schools in Sao Paulo. This study has as its central theme religiosity at Vai-Vai samba school, founded by a an African group in the decade of 1930. It maintain a complex and close link with traditions of African culture, in the way they associate their activities to the ritual practices of Candomble. With a new approach, because there are no previous studies about this issue, it is intended to describe how this complex dialog occurs during the organization of carnival, because sometimes religious practices are done in profane spaces the same they do in their sacred spaces such as the terreiros (Candomble´s place of rituals). The paper shows that there is a very active participation of a babalorixa “father-of –saint” (Candomble Priest), who is also responsible for the school. Religious celebrations are done towards the patron Orishas, Esu and Ogum; and that these deities own a room (room-of-saint), inside the rehearsal court, with sacred objects that receive offerings and cult to the atabaque (african drums) sound. A relation which provides religious experiences and that brings energy axé (ase), as well as balance to the group that takes part, allows it and helps to keep tradition, as we´ll confirm through field research. Along with that we discuss about imaginary, symbolic system and rituals, present theoretical complementary information that lies on themes such as oral tradition, tradition creation, cultural identity, relationship between sacred and profane in afro-brazilian cultural movement and carnival organizations in Sao Paulo
