This research establishes a relationship between the concept of the universal priesthood of the believer proposed by Luther in the 16th century and the common priesthood of the People of God, theme of the Dogmatic Constitution Lumen Gentium, document of the Second Vatican Council. The priesthood of every baptized believer is of fundamental importance for the development of the Church, and this could be seen in the early years of Christianity, with its expansion and maturity due mainly to the collaboration of all the faithful, ordained and unordained. To this end, we refer to the bibliography concerning the Protestant Reformation, centered on Luther, as well as his writings, in order to identify the development of his theology. Documents were also consulted from the Catholic Church of Vatican Councils I and II so that a parallel can be drawn between the proposals of Luther and the Catholic Church. IECLB articles and CELAM documents were also examined to identify the role of the laity in both churches in Brazil and Latin America in the second half of the twentieth century. The research proposes an attempt at ecumenical dialogue focusing on the mission of their ministries
