Introduction: Down Syndrome (DS) is characterized by trisomy 21,the carriers present a total of 47 chromosomes instead of 46, which implies the presence of an extra chromosome. People with DS have similar characteristics that identify the syndrome, known as "Hall's cardinal signs". The diagnosis of DS can be made during pregnancy or after birth, by clinical diagnosis. DS is not a disease, but an intrinsic condition. Prejudice is one of the main barriers in the lives of individuals with DS and their families. The news of a diagnosis of DS has a major impact on parents, who experience a variety of reactions and feelings associated with this moment. Objective: Comprehend parents' perceptions and feelings when they hear the news of their child's DS diagnosis and analyze their experiences when they hear the news of the diagnosis. Methodology: A qualitative, descriptive study using semi-structured interviews with nine parents of individuals with DS enrolled at APAE in Itapetininga/SP. The reports obtained were organized and analyzed using Bardin's Content Analysis method, in which categories were created. Results: The reactions and feelings identified in the mothers' reports at the moment they received the news of their child's DS diagnosis were fear, fright, shame, joy, resignation, denial and dissatisfaction regarding the information and guidance related to DS at the time of communicating the diagnosis.The mothers' perceptions also point to a lack of preparation on the part of pediatricians in communicating the diagnosis of DS to the children's mothers, communication that was not sufficient to resolve doubts about the syndrome. Conclusion: The news of a diagnosis of DS has an impact on mothers, causing varying feelings and reactions. The mothers feel dissatisfied with the quantity and quality of the information and guidance they have received about DS, a result of the lack of preparation on the part of pediatricians to communicate the child's diagnosis of DS s: Voiding dysfunction; Occupational Health; Quality of Life
