As a university professor in private institutions of the Vale do Paraíba we have noticed over the years that graduate students have very limited participation and little interest in political activities. Political participation of university students plays an important role in the development of the concept of citizenship, and the insertion of these students in public life. Therefore, we decided to study this political detachment searching for a better understanding of the behavior of our students. Importantly, the preservation of democratic institutions is directly related to the concept of citizenship developed by its society. We initiated this study by reviewing our graduate courses since its emergence in the 19th century to present days. We then explored the political participation of university students in the second half of the 20th century, during historical events such as the military dictatorship that occurred between 1964 and 1985. Our theoretical basis referred to previous studies on the concept of political awareness, as well as its development and forms of manifestation. In order to reach our objectives, we utilized the concept of political awareness and its forms of manifestation developed by Professor Sandoval. We developed a research tool that was applied to 301 graduate students from private universities located in Vale do Paraíba. All subjects involved in the research were included in the analysis which compared data of five different courses, from three cities. Results were analyzed in order to correlate student behavior with known levels of political awareness. It revealed solidary, ethical students, concerned with others´ well being, but resistant to participate in public and political activities. This behavior pattern was observed in all levels of political awareness. Some differences have been found between courses, but between cities we found many similarities
