Although the early Christian records showed no particular interest in Mary of Nazareth, the mother of Jesus, today, Mary is one of the most important figures in Christianity. Her popularity, however, has placed Mary at the center of important debates during the history of Christianity. Even today, issues related to her cause difficulties in the dialogue between the various Christian confessions, especially those which derived from the Protestant Reformation, a movement that rejected the cult of the saints and Mary. Despite this rupture, the early Reformers seemed to nourish some admiration and reverence for Mary to an extent uncommon to the more recent Protestant confessions. The little space occupied by Mary among the Protestants motivated the conduction of this research. By means of a participant observation and analysis of the didactic material used in Sunday School at an Assembly of God church in the city of São Paulo, this research seeks to demonstrate how the identification of Mary as one of the elements associated with Catholicism interferes in the relationship between the members of the Assembly of God and the mother of Jesus
