A psicoterapia em 23 periódicos nacionais: uma contribuição à história da psicologia no Brasil

The lack of historical studies on psychotherapy led us to research what the writing of this history has been like in Brazil, over time. Having as a primary source articles published in 23 Brazilian journals which bring the theme psychotherapy, therapy and therapeutics, during the period between 1955 and 2010, we've found 532 articles bringing the descriptors, 197 of them with historical data for psychotherapy.We've conducted two surveys: the first one considered the period between 1994 and 1999 - following Teixeira e Nunes' article (2001), "Psychotherapy: A History Without Registration" - and the second expanded the research period from 1955 to 1993 and from 2000 to 2010 in the same 23 journals. In those 197 articles, 266 authors write. In the period from 1994 to 1999, 33% of the authors are psychiatrists, 18% of other authors follow the psychoanalytic approach and the remaining 51% are distributed in other perspectives. Over 48 years, according to the research, authors from the area of psychoanalysis and psychiatry prevail; the phenomenology and person-centered approach also appear significantly, and the significant growth of cognitive behavioral approaches has been noticed. It was noticed that reading complete articles can help you find information about a history of psychotherapy. People's names or events are associated with psychotherapy or practices interpreted as belonging to or close to what has been called psychotherapy. In the end, considering the difficulty of finding definitions for psychotherapy in the articles studied, we searched definitions in dictionaries, among which the American Psychological Association's (APA) definition, the World Council for Psychotherapy's definition, the Federal Council of Psychology's definition and one that differs from all, the one found in the Ontopsychology dictionary. From a quick analysis of the definitions, we conclude that there is no consensus about what Psychotherapy is and debate over whether it is possible a history of psychotherapy
