The aim of this study was to present, analyze and discuss psychoanalytic conceptions of anorexia from the theory of Freud and Lacan. With the purpose of contextualizing, the research presented a anorexia brief history and its design within and outside the field of psychopathology, as well as the guidelines for diagnosis and treatment sustained by contemporary psychiatry. Subsequently, considering the indications of Freud and Lacan about mental anorexia, it was possible to analyze and articulate such propositions with the structural design of the Oedipus complex and the concept of object a as formulated by Lacan. This theoretical path allowed pointing out aspects of structural diagnostics, relating them to the concepts of necessity, demand, desire and jouissance, which were also discussed from two short clinical cases. The results showed that although anorexia nervosa was initially connected to hysteria, it can be present not only in a neurotic structure but also in a psychotic structure, in different ways. This discussion is relevant because it emphasizes the importance of differential structural diagnosis in the orientation of the analytic treatment direction
