The target of this study is the inventory made after someone passes away, highlighting the extrajudicial inventory. The study aims to demonstrate the peculiarities to choose the administrative means, overcoming the existing slowness and bureaucracy when it is done through a trial and, in this way, describe, explain, clarify and interpret the studied procedure, as well as explore with the purpose of improve the ideas through the knowledges brought up about the subject under discussion. The methodology used was bibliography through books, specialized publications and Brazilian legislation, specifically the Constitution of the Federal Republic, Civil Code, Civil Trial Code, Law nr. 11.441/2007, among others; other standards and resolutions were considered as resolutions from the National Justice Council, standards from the General Comptroller of Justice, decisions from courts and internet publications. As result, it was identified that the peculiarities are occasional and the solution obtained extrajudicially helps to unburden the Judiciary, that can dedicate its efforts to lawsuit resolutions. It was possible to realize that there are polemic issues around the subject, as well as the evolution of the understanding applied to these issues over time
