Resumo: nternet use is growing every year and studies indicate that people already use virtual search tools as the first source of information on health, becoming important to know this domain when it regards to pain, according to its prevalence in all strata of population. The literature review indicated that the informative content available on websites related to pain is of low quality, but there has been no research on materials written in Portuguese. The objective of this study was to characterize the universe with which the user comes across when searching information about pain on the Internet, analyzing the expressed demands, the quality of the information obtained as well as the usability of sites found. It was delimited to analyze the first search page using Google Web Search, the most popular search tool of the Internet, using eight key words ("pain"; "chronic pain"; "I have pain"; "I feel pain"; "headache"; "cephalalgia"; back pain and low back pain"), obtaining 64 objects for analysis. Among the websites found, there were: pages of health sites; pages developed by experts or medical societies; online newspapers and magazines; virtual libraries. Were found in the category of Virtual Settlement: blogs; forums; Facebook pages; Youtube; and Wikipedia pages. The methodology used, consisted of a documental and qualitative analysis of all the pages found. Regarding to user demand it was found that Internet users seek information concerning diagnosis; treatment options; professional indications and specialized treatment places; embracement; identification; symptoms relief; the "pain cure"; express dissatisfaction with medical demeanor; and find parameters for their symptoms and suffering as well as previously treatment indicated by a healthcare professional. Considering the quality of information, we built a set of evaluation criteria including the largest possible number of virtual search tools. The analysis allowed us to verify that 57% of results show content with accuracy, although they all return the information to the internet users, related to the diagnosis, prevention, treatment or pain mechanisms. It was also observed that 80% of pages found reserve space for advertising. It is relevant that the sites show the creation date or the update of the published content, however, we could not find this information in 54% of them. Finally , regarding to usability , we had sites that: are unformatted; use intense and tiresome colors; does not open on certain browsers; take time to load the available content, or show errors; have lots of information and / or advertising; have difficult texts to understand. In general terms it can be concluded that Internet users are demanding pain information from diagnosis to treatment, but the quality of results varies greatly and it is not always the best information is easily accessible, standing out the demand to educate patients to learn how to browse more reliable content on the Internet and to encourage professionals to produce information at the same time with quality and easy access
