Scientific knowledge combined with advanced available technologies has made it possible to select which embryo will be implanted in the uterus or which one will not by using preimplantation genetic and chromosomal diagnosis. This work aims to present some ethical and legal views and discussions on the subject. For this, it will explore the conflicts involved, the expected or perceived results (if there is legislation on the subject) and the possible solutions (exploring the answers given to the questions raised, if any). To do so, we analyze three cases (selection for HLA compatibility, for determination of chromosomal sex and to avoid disease), chosen because they make arguments of different types explicit. Arguments for and against each selection were then opposed. We also analyzed the way that different countries regulated the matter or that bioethics committees have decided about it. The work has a human rights bias, and its analysis was carried out using the technique of weighting and balancing, always considering the basic pillars of biomedical ethics and law. Finally, we contrast the right to life before implantation with the one after birth to invest in whether, and how, they can be differentiated
