The present dissertation aims to analyze black people ́s memories presented by the samba schools of São Paulo in the period from 1977 to 1990 when the parade was held on Avenida Tiradentes and how the press reported such memories. Analyzing the black people ́s memories means examining and bringing into the academic discussions the artistic representations presented by marginalized groups of the city of São Paulo during the Carnival, with their values, idealization, and desires, their symbolisms and resistance in the face of the reality of historic segregation. The period adopted by the researcher is before the increase and expansion of the samba schools in São Paulo city. Therefore, it is also the objective of this research to analyze how the main communication vehicles the major newspapers and subsequently television channels broadcasted these representations to their audience. We understand culture as something dynamic, and the struggle for memories is present daily in our lives. Thus, the understanding between the presentation of the memories of Carnival groups whose majority was composed of black people and how the press reported such presentations helps us to understand the social and political relations of Brazil within the time and space in question
