Resumo: The present study aims to shed light on the recent theoretical field that has been established after the works of René Girard, embracing debates regarding anthropology, sociology, linguistics, and here it is put in dialogue with psychoanalytic semiotics. Girard and Sigmund Freud´s positions do not always seem harmonious and the mimetic theory Girard offers gets almost to the point of undermining the whole psychoanalytic theory. At the same time, there is much confluence among the two thinkers, in such a way that a dialogue between the two giants is not only possible as it is prolific, as we can notice from the recent production by new theorists, pointing to the physiology of the mimetic hypothesis and to possible ways into the use of its concepts in the clinical practice and the reading of culture

O teórico francês é herdeiro confesso da pesquisa de Freud, suas posições nem sempre parecem muito harmônicas, ao ponto de vermos Girard colocando em xeque as questões mais fundamentais da psicanálise.
