Resumo: This study aims to demonstrate and evaluate some of the existing affinities between virtual social networks "Facebook" and "Twitter" and the book "1984". The novel, written by George Orwell, figures among the world’s major literary works, especially recognized by its political content, and numerous social provocations. The research is carried out from the choice of two points of comparison: the establishment of groups of people based on a leader or ideal, and the use of the language by individuals. In the Orwell's narrative, those who rule the society are in charge of creating a linguistic system called Newspeak. The new language, which is based on the original language, intends to supplant it altogether, and basically consists in the destruction of most of the terms and at the concentration of new directions in verbal signs. In addition to the annihilation of the old language, Newspeak's function is the decreasing of the available words, shortening the communicative capacity of people, preventing the appearance of any thought contrary to the domination and total control state in which the society is put into. On the other hand, in Digital Social Networks language benefits from the possibilities of expression brought by the Internet. Verbal signs arise guided by the need for expression of the users, by the desire to make them understood and feel belonging to the groups formed within the networks. The reflection aims a dialogue between the fiction proposed by Orwell and the reality experienced by the users of the sites in question. So on, it is based on studies of Saussure and Jakobson, with regard to the concept of the sign and the dynamics of the construction of words and expressions, through the relations of association and juxtaposition. Was found in the structure of Newspeak and the use of hashtags and the term "Like" within the network, some of the different factors to which verbal language can be bound. The discussion continues and extends to the functioning of the Digital Social Networks and the formation of groups - under the operation of the Freudian concept of identification. Undertakes an examination of the features offered by these social networking sites, virtual "places" that incorporate the human sense of belonging - and sponsor the appearance of groups based on ideals, brands, individuals or basically shared tastes with other users. Likewise, the causes of the gathering of people around a tyrant and oppressor leader, described in 1984, are analyzed, drawing on the Etienne de La Boétie's Voluntary Servitude theory. Thus, it is argued that with the emergence of Digitial Social Networking and its tools, the creation of human groups was boosted and got a great notoriety. As well as the new way of the verbal language, launched by the internet users, in order to improve the achievement of their communication objectives and the establishment ties with the others

As well as the new way of the verbal language, launched by the internet users, in order to improve the achievement of their communication objectives and the establishment ties with the othersEste trabalho propõe-se a demonstrar e avaliar as algumas das afinidades existentes entre as redes sociais virtuais Facebook e Twitter e o livro 1984.
