This monograph aims at tracing the course of the socio-educational work of the pedagogue Teresa de Saldanha, as well as the reasons that led her to found an Association and a Congregation, both with house-schools, to alphabetizing girls and women. She also stablished asylums for the blind, and health centres, during the 1800s in Lisbon. In order to show what had inspired her to donate all her belongs and devote all her life to the most needy, we have traced a brief account of the social and political situation of Portugal in the 19th century. We will mention some political happenings and their consequences and describe the position of the Portuguese women in this patriarchal society, with based on its Civil Legislation. We have elaborated this work based on two studies about Teresa de Saldanha's correspondence. To interpret these pre-selected letters, we have had recourse to the theorists Teresa Malatian, Michel Foucault and Angela de Castro Gomes
