In everyday cyberculture, the presence of intelligent conversational agents is an irrefutable fact. In this context, communication is undergoing profound transformations, as people are increasingly interacting with algorithms. This doctoral thesis aims to investigate the communicational complexities that occur from these interactions. With the IoT, we have been experimenting with an extension of the traditional internet that makes it possible to communicate with everyday objects. Access to these systems amplifies our relationship with information, as their agency triggers a complex and hypermedia process that can unfold, come, go, and return indefinitely. Our epistemological choice is anchored in communication and hypermedia studies (LEÃO), focusing on conversational agents in the context of their creation processes in culture. We understand creation as a “network under semiotic construction” that establishes “dynamic systems of meaning.” To outline the focal points discussed here, we rely on considerations about the agency of physical or digital objects (LATOUR, LEMOS) and on the concept of “hyperobject” (MORTON) which is characterized by being things massively distributed in time and space, in relation to human beings. We also highlight the discussion about the “neo-human” as “the result of an evolutionary process of communicational forms” created by “human beings” (SANTAELLA). We present an analytical study of multiple cases, as one of the fundamental principles of case study research is in the desire to understand complex social phenomena. The problem of this research resides in understanding what are the characteristics of communication that occurs mediated by conversational agents. Our goal is to develop in-depth case studies on how communication mediated by intelligent conversational agents, widely used in Brazil, takes place. We understand that there is an emerging need to better understand how this technology impacts our everyday attitudes, in view of the growth of interactions through this type of agent. This thesis is relevant to the area of communication because it aims that the result will help us to understand the model of communication intermediated by intelligent conversational agents, practiced by society, in this historical moment. It is intended to present technical and relational aspects of the use of conversational artificial intelligence in order to broaden the context of current research on the issue of human-machine interactions. This theoretical foundation proposes to help the process of production and evaluation of scientific materials that should provide an initial sample of the use of conversational agents, in a way that goes beyond informal market studies. As a result, it is expected to promote an increase in reflections on communication mediated by algorithms, everyday hypermedia, humanmachine interaction and its consequences for life
