This work aims to approach masculinity through discussions of public health on men health and health seeking behavior. We pay attention to sanitary and statistical data of the male population that indicate, in general, a more distant relationship with health and self-care than women. A bibliographic review of scientific articles in public and collective health published in online databases such as Scielo, BVS, PubMed and Pepsic was carried out. The research, in this way, is inserted in the field as a psychoanalytical research in encounter with social phenomena. The work mainly crosses four scenes in which the male is an important agent of his own suffering: in the avoidance of primary care, in the denial of the AIDS epidemic, in the difficulty with the diagnosis of prostate cancer and in personal violence. In the results, we stated that the man's relationship with health and self-care is crossed by an important symbolic place for the configuration of the representation of masculinity: the differentiation of women by denying castration in the social bond. In this way, the work discusses gender relations and manifestations of their norms and inequalities in the field of health but is exclusively attentive to how gender can affect the well-being of oneself and others
