This paper is based on the observation of the predominance of visuality in contemporary Western societies, which dates back to Ancient Greece, is intensified by the advent of the Renaissance perspective, and consecrated by the consolidation of the modern visual paradigm. This domain extends to the field of artistic production, museology and museography. At the same time, anthropologists have demonstrated that the prominence of one sense over another in a society is linked to cultural variations. Thus, the paradigm of visuality should not be taken as absolute and universal. Therefore, this work addresses the theme of multisensoriality in artistic practice and in the organization of exhibitions from a historical perspective, locating important proposals, works and exhibitions that sought to break with the paradigm of visuality in these contexts. It is also discussed how the theme is linked to the matter of accessibility in artistic practice and in museums and cultural spaces. Finally, the exhibition “The senses: design beyond vision”, held at the Cooper Hewitt Museum, in 2018, is taken as a case study object, as it is an exhibition that has, both in its curatorial proposal and exhibition design and in the choice of works, the concern to approach and stimulate the multiplicity of senses, without hierarchizing them
