Resumo: In his acclaimed work Discourse on the origin and the foundations of inequality among men, dated of 1755, the philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712-1778), thinking of man on his state of nature, mentions in a mysterious and instigating way the “qualities of mind or of soul”, which everyone would present considering an absolute natural equality. The thinker affirms that these qualities, among others, would be, indeed, differences between men in natural equality, which is the zero-point of the history Rousseau tells; which suggests, firstly, an idea of man’s singularity, featured by nature – a natural singularity - in the early individuals of the humankind in pre-social state. In this scenario, men would be equal in their state of nature regarding to fundamental rights; although, different and unique as individuals. The main purpose of this thesis is to argue that the differences between the individuals, specially the singularity between each one, would be not only one of the many causes of moral and politic inequality between each one, would not only be one of the many causes of moral and political inequality recognized by Rousseau, but, moreover, these differences concerning the perfectibility - another essential attribute of human nature in Rousseau’s reflection -, would explain the historic process which led men to the scenario the civilization currently finds itself. Nevertheless, this singularity is, above all, a value to be considered as we think about a free, fair and legit society as mentioned in The Social Contract. In another terms, our purposes is to highlight the importance of the ideas of differences, man’s singularity suggested by “qualities of the mind or of soul”, parallel with the equality, perfectibility and inequality ideas in the civilization’s diagnostic performed by Rousseau

Nevertheless, this singularity is, above all, a value to be considered as we think about a free, fair and legit society as mentioned in The Social Contract. In another terms, our purposes is to highlight the importance of the ideas of differences, man’s singularity suggested by “qualities of the mind or of soul”, parallel with the equality, perfectibility and inequality ideas in the civilization’s diagnostic performed by RousseauNo seu célebre Discurso sobre a origem e os fundamentos da desigualdade entre os homens, de 1755, o filósofo Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712-1778), ao pensar o homem no seu estado de natureza, refere-se de maneira ao mesmo tempo enigmática e instigante às “qualidades do espírito ou da alma” que cada um teria em meio a uma igualdade natural absoluta. O pensador afirma que essas qualidades, dentre outras, seriam, na verdade, diferenças entre os homens na igualdade natural, isto é, no hipotético ponto zero da sua história; isso sugere, em princípio, uma ideia de singularidade do homem, presente já por natureza ‒ isto é, uma singularidade natural ‒ nos primeiros indivíduos da humanidade em estado pré-social. Iguais em estado de natureza no que diz respeito aos direitos fundamentais; porém, diferentes, singulares e únicos como indivíduos. O objetivo principal desta tese é argumentar que as diferenças entre os indivíduos, mais precisamente a singularidade natural de cada um deles, seriam não só uma das causas da desigualdade moral e política entre os homens diagnosticada por Rousseau, que uma vez relacionadas com a perfectibilidade - outro atributo essencial da natureza humana na reflexão rousseauniana -, explicaria no geral o processo histórico que levou o homem à situação na qual a civilização encontra-se hoje. Apesar disso, tal singularidade seria sobretudo um valor a ser considerado quando Rousseau pensa numa sociedade livre, justa e legítima como a do seu Do Contrato social. Em outras palavras, nosso propósito aqui é chamar a atenção para a importância da ideia das diferenças entre os homens, para a singularidade de cada um sugerida pela expressão “qualidades do espírito ou da alma”, em articulação com as ideias de igualdade, perfectibilidade e desigualdade no diagnóstico da civilização feito por RousseauCoordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPESapplication/pdfhttp://tede2.pucsp.br/tede/retrieve/52212/Valdir%20Vieira%20Rezende.pdf.jpgporPontifícia Universidade Católica de São PauloPrograma de Estudos Pós-Graduados em FilosofiaPUC-SPBrasilFaculdade de Filosofia, Comunicação, Letras e ArtesRousseau, Jean-Jacques [1712-1778] - Crítica e interpretaçãoDireito naturalIgualdadeRousseau, Jean-Jacques [1712-1778] - Criticism and interpretationState of natureEqualityCNPQ::CIENCIAS HUMANAS::FILOSOFIADiferenças e desigualdade: o espírito e a política em Jean-Jacques Rousseauinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersioninfo:eu-repo/semantics/doctoralThesisinfo:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessreponame:Biblioteca Digital de Teses e Dissertações da PUC_SPinstname:Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo (PUC-SP)instacron:PUC_SPTEXTValdir Vieira Rezende.pdf.txtValdir Vieira Rezende.pdf.txtExtracted texttext/plain654605https://repositorio.pucsp.br/xmlui/bitstream/handle/23194/4/Valdir%20Vieira%20Rezende.pdf.txt790b8cf07adf631c950f193f42f0c10cMD54LICENSElicense.txtlicense.txttext/plain;
