Resumo: The aim of this thesis is the development of a process of inquiry concerning what characterizes the work activity of journalists and the ethos working for a "real time news agency by using the instruction to the double method, created for Oddone with adaptations, emphasizing the contributions of language for approaching the questions of work, having as a prescriptive document Reuters A handbook of Reuters journalism - A guide to standards, style and operations. Theoretical grounds conjugate notions from the linked dimensions of human activity we know as language and work, in the perspective of their interdependent interrelationship. The main theoretical references are Bakhtin and Maingueneau (in the field of language), Clot and Faïta, Gorz, Sennett and Schwartz (in the field of work), Bucci, Chaparro and Rossi (concerning journalism). The justification of this study resides in the one hand in the social role the press has in the contemporary world, characterized as the information and knowledge society and, in the other hand, the absence of research on news agencies from a discursive point of view. The main discursive reference in the treatment of the data is the Global Semantics developed by Maingueneau and, in the field of the work, Ergology s grounds as developed by Schwartz, in a collaborative inter-discursive relationship before the enigmas of journalist s professional activity. Research was done at Reuters, the most important news agency of the world, having the protagonist/journalist in the role of instructor and the researcher as the double. As a final result, we perceive all efforts journalists do to develop their activity under pressures both internal and external to the company where they work, the vital importance of time for a flexible corporation and the tensions between chronological time and the time of the company as a continuous flow of information production that aims to make it be the best among competitors in the news market. It was possible to perceive the central role of language in the development of journalists activity, in the conflict between prescribed and done work, being discourse taken as both the raw material for and the final result as news. This study also showed that journalists, in order to do their professional work, live the predicament of conciliating the interests of the company with the conditions to fulfill all tasks needed for developing their work activity, carrying through a true debate on values, in a tension between norms and the need to renormalize, between prescriptions and the accomplishment of the set of their tasks, pressured by both speed and accuracy - two of the four Reuters principles. Taken in this quandary, journalists, before the telephone, television sets and two computer screens, mobilize themselves in their daily professional routine, having to face deontological and discursive questions inherent to their activity. We identify this quandary by examining two discursive formations that make them to work in the intersection of these attitudes: that of the company s and that of one working for a realtime news agency. Pressured by the fear of not getting a scoop, without time to do a careful investigation, they tend to believe more than they should on their sources and may write news without due confirmation, comparing a less than should be expected number of discourses in a process less vulnerable to error or to influences of particular groups and people in the process of definition of the facts that must be turned into news

Pressured by the fear of not getting a scoop, without time to do a careful investigation, they tend to believe more than they should on their sources and may write news without due confirmation, comparing a less than should be expected number of discourses in a process less vulnerable to error or to influences of particular groups and people in the process of definition of the facts that must be turned into newsO objetivo desta tese é desenvolver um processo de investigação acerca de como se caracteriza a atividade de trabalho do jornalista e do ethos de uma agência de notícias em tempo real , por meio do método de instrução ao sósia, criado por Oddone, com adaptações, ressaltando as contribuições da linguagem no tratamento das questões do trabalho, tendo como documento prescritivo o Manual de Operações Editoriais da Reuters.
