Resumo: This paper analyzes the representativeness of women in the office of rector, discussing the possibilities of a leading role for women in places of institutional power in universities, based on the experience of Nadir Gouvêa Kfouri (1976-1984) at the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo. Nadir's administrations were notable for their pioneering aspects when she was the first woman appointed (1976) to hold the rectorship in a Catholic university anywhere in the world, and during her second term (1980), when she was reconfirmed in the post through the first election for the position of rector - in this case, a woman – ever held among Brazilian universities. In view of the fact that, still today, there are few women who hold the office of rector in the country, we propose to investigate how the memories of Nadir's rectorship at PUC-SP were mobilized as a mark of important transformations at the university, shaping the process of democratization of the university in the midst of the civilmilitary dictatorship. In addition, this dissertation aims to discuss gender hierarchies in this institutional space and, specifically, with regard to the elaboration of the narrative that Nadir herself was constructing about her professional trajectory. Toward this end, the investigation involves the analysis of a diverse body of documents (institutional documents, press and oral documentation) seeking, from various perspectives, to “hear” what remains of both the collective and individual memories. Nadir's rectorship engaged in behavioral changes that pointed to the installation of the democratic process, in dissonance, at that historical moment, with other Brazilian universities, leading an administration that had the challenge of balancing/meeting multiple demands of the university community (encouraged by entities representing faculty, staff and students) and by the Church (in the context of the “social commitment” project, a direct reference to the premises of the Second Vatican Council). With regard to the issue of women in management, which was unprecedented in the institution's academic production up to then, the dissertation intends to reflect upon and discuss the constitution of Nadir's professional career, combining the debate of recurring agendas regarding the (non) ascension of women to high management positions, and in the case of the university, the specificities and challenges, whether structural, institutional, ideological or symbolic, which were present in Nadir's daily life during the period of her rectorship and the development of democracy at PUC. Hence, it is possible to verify which strategies the rector used to face these processes of democratization in a period of political and cultural effervescence at the university, analyzing permanences and changes, confrontations and contradictions experienced during her administration, particularly from the gender perspective

Hence, it is possible to verify which strategies the rector used to face these processes of democratization in a period of political and cultural effervescence at the university, analyzing permanences and changes, confrontations and contradictions experienced during her administration, particularly from the gender perspectiveEsta pesquisa analisa a representatividade feminina na reitoria, discutindo as possibilidades de um protagonismo das mulheres em lugares de poder institucional nas universidades a partir da experiência de Nadir Gouvêa Kfouri (1976-1984) na Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo.
