This report sought to show in an introductory way the topic separation and divorce and how this phenomenon relates to couples and their families. In order to discuss some topics we talked about: divorce in Brazil based on Statistics from IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics) and the historical development of the divorce; mate choice; vital cycle and family; divorce and family; Stages of Divorce; consequences of divorce; divorce according to the children; systemic therapy and divorce. Method was used as a literature review of the area of family and divorce principles of systemic pattern, with research on various internet databases like Medline and SciELO through key words (divorce, separation, family conflict), as well as research in the literature family area, for these reasons this report is qualitative. After research and review of the literature concludes that separation and divorce are represented as a form of social belonging, within a network that represents adult posture, part of a socioeconomic group and theoretically secure. Maybe that's why some people face certain difficulties and fear of the topic discussed here, because the social and family implications that are interconnected. With these literary data we seek to arrive at a discussion on the topic and promote curiosity in those who wish to continue researching the subject.
