According to Skinner (1986), verbal behavior is "... behavior that is reinforced through the mediation of other people, but only when other people are behaving in ways that have been shaped and maintained by a verbal environment or language" (p 121, our translation). Thus, the definition of verbal behavior makes explicit the dependence on the modeling and maintenance of this behavior by a verbal community. The present study aimed to analyze how Skinner, throughout his publications, characterizes and defines the verbal community, what roles it assigns and how it suggests that it fulfills that role. To this end, excerpts were selected that contained the search words verbal community and verbal environment throughout Skinner's work. Such excerpts were read in full and classified in the following categories: “definition / characteristics of the verbal community”; “Verbal subcommunities”; "Relationship between the verbal and speaking community", "relationship between the verbal and listening community", "relationships with other areas" and "verbal community as cultural practice". The main characteristics of the verbal community for Skinner are the fact that it is a group of speakers, listeners and audiences that differentially reinforce and punish specific responses of the speaker
