Currently, the animal has ceased to be just the guardian of the house and has become a member of the family. Researches point to the exponential growth of the pet market as well as a greater link between human and animal. However, by the time the pet dies, it is as if he returns in time, at a time when he was only the protagonist of the yard. Considering this controversial scenario, the aim of this study is to present and understand how the process of mourning for the pet happens nowadays, based on testimonials of those who lost a pet, on academic researches and psychoanalytic approaches. For this, were used Lacan's elaborations on the structure of the unconscious and the self, Freud's studies on the drive of death and life, narcissism, the meaning of loss and mourning in the life of the individual, and the definition of melancholy, as well as Parkes' research on the symptoms of mourning in adult life. In addition to these studies, we used the research of Oliveira and other scholars such as Doka and Fuchs, who discuss not validated mourning by the pet and the role that the pet occupies in the life of its guardian. Some of the aspects analyzed were the challenges of the grieving person, acceptance by society and the support services and networks available. At the end of the research, it was possible to conclude that, although the mourning process and the pain for the rupture of the bond with the animal may be similar to that of a human being, the pain for the death of the pet is not validated by society yet, which means a limited support network and a possible barrier to the healthy elaboration of mourning. At the end, the study emphasizes the importance of each individual looking more empathically at the mourners for the death of their pet and being ready to support him when necessary in order to build a more welcoming society
