Resumo: This paper analyzes the historicity of Africa representations in the press, specifically in information magazines. The concern of historians with the "how Africa is portrayed" comes from further afield. The sources used are reports of travelers, merchants, missionaries and all kinds of agents colonizing, through literature, poetry, textbooks, popular tales, photography to the cinema and the press, which in the twentieth century became one of the main vehicles in the contest for the conviction and adherence to values and beliefs. The thesis that I try to demonstrate is that the representations of Africa in the press integrate the strategies of construction of the "Other", the "Different", the "inferiorized" as part of the establishment of Western hegemony and power relations in Brazil. For that purpose, a corpus of analysis was formed by the set of pieces published in the magazines Veja, Istoé and Época, which refer to the African continent, from the beginning of the circulation of these weekly newspapers, in 1968, 1976, 1998, respectively, until the year of 2013 when Nelson Mandela passed away. Also added was the magazine Tempo, a Mozambican publication that circulated from 1970 onwards. The selected pieces are analyzed from categories such as representation, in the line of reading made by Stuart Hall; structural racism and hegemony. The comparative analysis between the Brazilian and Mozambican publications is taken to capture dominant contents, silences, omissions and changes of focus revealing the role of these information magazines in the dispute over hegemony through representations of Africa as a decisive, structuring cultural element of power relations

The comparative analysis between the Brazilian and Mozambican publications is taken to capture dominant contents, silences, omissions and changes of focus revealing the role of these information magazines in the dispute over hegemony through representations of Africa as a decisive, structuring cultural element of power relationsO presente trabalho analisa a historicidade das representações de África na imprensa, especificamente em revistas de informação. A preocupação de historiadores com o “modo como à África é retratada” vem de mais longe. As fontes utilizadas vão de relatos de viajantes, mercadores, missionários e todo tipo de agente colonizador, passando pela literatura, poesia, livros didáticos, contos populares, fotografia até o cinema e a imprensa que, no século XX, tornou-se um dos principais veículos na disputa pelo convencimento e adesão a valores e crenças. A tese que procuro demonstrar é que as representações da África na imprensa integram as estratégias de construção do “Outro”, do “Diferente”, do “inferiorizado” como parte da instauração da hegemonia ocidental e das relações de poder no Brasil. Para tal constituiu-se um corpus de análise formado pelo conjunto de peças publicadas nas revistas Veja, Istoé e Época, que fazem referência ao continente africano, desde o início da circulação destes semanários, respectivamente em 1968, 1976, 1998, até o ano de 2013 quando Nelson Mandela faleceu. Acrescentou-se ainda a revista Tempo, publicação moçambicana que circulou a partir de 1970. As peças selecionadas são analisadas a partir de categorias como representação, na linha de leitura feita por Stuart Hall; racismo estrutural e hegemonia. Adota-se a análise comparativa entre as publicações brasileira e destas com a moçambicana para captar conteúdos dominantes, silêncios, omissões e mudanças de enfoque reveladoras do papel destas revistas de informação na disputa de hegemonia através de representações da África como um elemento cultural decisivo, estruturante das relações de poderCoordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPESapplication/pdfhttp://tede2.pucsp.br/tede/retrieve/48756/Juvenal%20de%20Carvalho%20Concei%c3%a7%c3%a3o.pdf.jpgporPontifícia Universidade Católica de São PauloPrograma de Estudos Pós-Graduados em HistóriaPUC-SPBrasilFaculdade de Ciências SociaisÁfricaImprensaRepresentaçãoPressRepresentationRacismCNPQ::CIENCIAS HUMANAS::HISTORIAEm pauta: Veja, Tempo e as representações de Áfricainfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersioninfo:eu-repo/semantics/doctoralThesisinfo:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessreponame:Biblioteca Digital de Teses e Dissertações da PUC_SPinstname:Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo (PUC-SP)instacron:PUC_SPTEXTJuvenal de Carvalho Conceição.pdf.txtJuvenal de Carvalho Conceição.pdf.txtExtracted texttext/plain649392https://repositorio.pucsp.br/xmlui/bitstream/handle/22088/4/Juvenal%20de%20Carvalho%20Concei%c3%a7%c3%a3o.pdf.txt0ab48b74ab1dee6bbc514efdb5a02a81MD54LICENSElicense.txtlicense.txttext/plain;
