Resumo: The reality of lay teachers is still an unsolved issue in Brazil and in other countries, such as Mozambique, so the necessity to provide a theoretical training for these educators is explicit. They don’t have theoretical knowledge, but they do have the practice of teaching. The general objective of this research is to show how to provide a theoretical training for lay preschool teachers. The investigation was based on a bibliographic research about the teachers training from their practice, with reference to the studies of SAVIANI (2009), TARDIF (2011), PERRENOUD and THURLER (2002), JOSSO (2004), and NOVOA (1997). Then, Paulo Freire’s teaching experiences were studied based on his works, and the works of scholars that studied him, such as SAUL (2000). The research continued through the report of an experience in the training of lay teachers in Mozambique. We could say that it is possible to become an educator by practice, but there will be many difficulties due to the lack of theoretical knowledge. It was possible to conclude that for a successful training of lay teachers, the specific necessities of their work need to be recognized, and it's essential to use their experience in teaching as the starting point of their training and as a possibility for a continuous improvement in their practic

O objetivo geral dessa pesquisa é caracterizar como realizar a formação de professores leigos para atuarem na educação infantil. A investigação foi realizada na forma de pesquisa bibliográfica, sobre a formação de professores a partir de sua prática, tendo como referência os estudos de SAVIANI (2009), TARDIF (2011), PERRENOUD e THURLER (2002), JOSSO (2004) e NOVOA (1997). Depois foram estudadas as experiências de Paulo Freire com base em suas obras, e de estudiosos sobre ele, como SAUL (2000). A pesquisa continuou por meio do relato de uma vivência na formação de professores leigos em Moçambique. É possível afirmar que, exercer o ofício de educador pela prática é possível, porém com algumas dificuldades pela falta da base teórica.
