Resumo: The regular physical exercises practicing it is an important action to prevent or postpone the chronic diseases appearing or the disability in elderly people. The modalities that exist generate different results regarding the functional capacity and psychological and social well being and thus they have the potential to improve the participant s health. This study aimed to analyze the effects of two kinds of exercise programs water-based (hydro gymnastics) and strength training (weight lifting) on people over 60 years old, considering their self-perception over their health and functional capability. 19 elderly people participated in the research. Ten of them were hydro gymnastics practicers (HD), eight of them were practicer of weightlifting and other gym fit exercises (WL group). One of them was practicing of both modalities. As data collection tool were used both SF-36 adapted and semi structured interview. The questionnaires data were analyzed quantitatively through the descriptive statistics considering the answers frequency in each group. For the socio demographic data analysis were described the mean and the standard deviation of the groups. The mean were compared in order to identify the difference between the Hydro gymnastics and Gym practicing group, through the T student test. The interviews were analyzed qualitatively, through the content analysis. Results shown differences between the groups only in the women percentage, diseases number and medication number. The three variable were significantly higher (p <0,05) in Hydro gymnastics group. The self-rated health was better in this group with 60% excellent/very good evaluation against 25% in the strength training group. There were no differences between the groups regarding the health changing classification between the pre and post exercise practicing period. The functional capability score was statistically higher in WL group in comparison to the HD group (p=0,009). Through the qualitative analysis we infer that both people from each of the groups have little knowledge about the specificity of the modalities they practice. The main differential results attributed to the Hydro gymnastics that deserve to be highlighted were psychsocial: mental health, mood and self-esteem improvement. Overall we have verified that both physical exercises modalities are positive to the elderly because they promote distinct benefits in which were highlighted better well being, pain reduction and prevention, better capability to execute activities daily and higher disposition and socialization, which are translated to a better health self- evaluation
