In this research, we analyzed the presence of Hercules Florence in the Expedition headed by Baron Georg Heinrich von Langsdorff, who traveled, between 1821 and 1829, in the interior of Brazil, from Rio de Janeiro to Amazonas, starting in Porto Feliz (SP) and followed until Amazonas, passing through Cuiabá (MT). Hercules Florence's diaries were printed, as well as Baron Langsdorff’s, his watercolors and paintings. It was an audacious expedition, in which 27 researchers and adventurers lost their lives, in order to collect flora and fauna and learn about the customs of the peoples of the region. The objective was achieved and, with the collection of species, the Herbarium of the National Museum was created, which was not affected by the fire that destroyed the building in September 2019. We analyzed the policy regarding expeditions before and after the arrival of the Royal family to Brazil in 1808, as well as the path chosen to carry out the Expedition. Finally, we analyzed the fundamental role in scientific expeditions, which was the responsibility of the traveling painters, since they were responsible for describing and translating, on paper, all the details of the New World inventory.
