This thesis aims to analyze the relative autonomy of the social worker,within the scope of the penitentiary system of the State of Paraíba. It seeks to establish an approximation to the reality in which Social Service professionals work in state prisons, identifying the limits and possibilities that affect the professional work in the sphere of criminal execution; characterizing the profile of these professionals and the actions and strategies adopted by them in the direction of the ethical-political principles of the profession and; mapping the character of the institutional demands forwarded to the Social Service in this area of action. In order to do so, in the light of critical criminology, it starts with the discussion about the official discourse and the hidden functions performed by prison institutions in the capitalist society and their contextualization in the reality of Paraíba, especially with regard to the field of action of the social worker. From the point of view of the profession, the theoretical-critical perspective is used as a guideline that conceives Social Work as a profession within the scope of the social relations founded on the capitalist mode of production, whose nature of the activity performed is understood as work. In this sense, the study was carried out based on a bibliographical and documentary research and a field research, with qualitative methodology, through interviews with social workers of the state penitentiary system. Among the research findings, we highlight the high turnover of social workers in the local prison context, the weakening of the employment relationship and precarious working conditions – elements that, although they affect the relative autonomy of the professional, do not detract from the margin of possibility that this category presents in the ethical-political direction of the professional practice
