Resumo: Old and modern studies about Rhetoric has a little focus on the theme of memory, and when they do so, they particularly emphasize mnemonic art and its importance for discourse communication. We understand, however, that memory and its processes are inherent in human practices and closely linked to the development and the course of man over time. Due to this area to be explored, with regard to Rhetoric, this research has as its theme epistolary rhetoric and the implication of memory as a repository of arguments and strategies for the construction of this type of discourse. The problem, therefore, is to question the extent to which memory provides the basis for the argumentation in the space-time mismatch in the letters exchanged between Mário de Andrade and Carlos Drummond de Andrade during the 1920s. For this, the rhetorical references are based on Aristotle (2005 [384-322 BC]), Reboul (2004), Meyer (2007), Tringali (2014) and Perelman and Olbrechts-Tyteca (2014), with contributions from Ferreira, L. A. (2010). The general objective is to examine the strategies of selection and disposition of arguments by means, respectively, of invention and disposition, steps of the rhetorical system. As specific objectives, we chose: to verify how the speaker rescues and articulates the arguments concerning social memory to re-hierarchize the values of the audience and to persuade; To identify to what extent the audience is persuaded and corroborates the effectiveness or not of the motivating speech of epistolary response. The theoretical basis of structure, tensions, and transformations of epistolary discourse considers Victor (1980 [4th century AD]), Foucault (1992) and Bazerman (2011). The studies on memory and cognition by Van Dijk (2008), and memory, individual and society in Pollak (1992), Bosi (1993), Le Goff (2013) and Gondar (2016) provide the concepts of memory. The results indicate that memory is a repository of arguments and strategies that has rhetorical potential because of its strength to arouse passions and, therefore, move values towards a rhetorical goal. Also, due to its inalienable condition for action and human development, it is stands up as a necessary resource to every rhetorical course, from the construction to the reception of the discourse, through memory models constructed and continuously reformulated from man's experiences and interactions; therefore, it surpasses the mnemonic function. Moreover, we find from the application of the first two stages of the rhetorical system that the tessitura of the discourse of the two speakers reveals wit in the selection and strategy in the disposition of the arguments in such a way that it is effective in convincing and persuading

Also, due to its inalienable condition for action and human development, it is stands up as a necessary resource to every rhetorical course, from the construction to the reception of the discourse, through memory models constructed and continuously reformulated from man's experiences and interactions; therefore, it surpasses the mnemonic function. Moreover, we find from the application of the first two stages of the rhetorical system that the tessitura of the discourse of the two speakers reveals wit in the selection and strategy in the disposition of the arguments in such a way that it is effective in convincing and persuadingOs estudos antigos e modernos sobre Retórica pouco se debruçam sobre o tema memória e, quando o fazem, destacam sobretudo a arte mnemônica e sua importância para a comunicação do discurso. Entendemos, no entanto, que a memória e seus processos são inerentes às práticas humanas e intimamente ligados ao desenvolvimento e ao percurso do homem ao longo do tempo. Em virtude desse espaço a ser explorado, no que concerne à Retórica, esta pesquisa tem por tema a retórica epistolar e a implicação da memória como armazém de argumentos e de estratégias para a construção desse tipo de discurso. O problema consiste, portanto, em interrogar em que medida a memória fornece as bases para a argumentação no descompasso espaço-temporal nas cartas trocadas entre Mário de Andrade e Carlos Drummond de Andrade durante a década de 1920. Para isso, as referências retóricas alicerçam-se em Aristóteles (2005 [384-322 a.C.]), Reboul (2004), Meyer (2007), Tringali (2014) e Perelman e Olbrechts-Tyteca (2014), com contribuições de Ferreira, L. A. (2010). O objetivo geral é examinar as estratégias de seleção e disposição dos argumentos por meio, respectivamente, da invenção e da disposição, etapas do sistema retórico. Como objetivos específicos, elegemos: verificar como o orador resgata e articula os argumentos concernentes à memória social para re-hierarquizar os valores do auditório e persuadir; identificar em que medida o auditório é persuadido e corrobora a eficácia ou não do discurso motivador da resposta epistolar. A base teórica sobre estrutura, tensões e transformações do discurso epistolar considera Victor (1980 [séc. 4 d.C.]), Foucault (1992) e Bazerman (2011). Os estudos desenvolvidos sobre memória e cognição de Van Dijk (2008) e memória, indivíduo e sociedade em Pollak (1992), Bosi (1993), Le Goff (2013) e Gondar (2016) fornecem os conceitos sobre memória. Os resultados apontam que a memória é um armazém de argumentos e estratégias que tem potencial retórico em virtude de sua força para suscitar paixões e, por conseguinte, movimentar valores em prol de um objetivo retórico. Também, por sua condição inalienável à ação e ao desenvolvimento humanos, consubstancia-se como recurso necessário a todo percurso retórico, da construção à recepção do discurso, por meio de modelos de memória construídos e continuamente reformulados a partir das vivências e interações do homem; por isso, supera a função mnemônica. Ademais, constatamos, pela aplicação das duas primeiras etapas do sistema retórico, que a tessitura do discurso dos dois oradores revela sagacidade na seleção e estratégia na disposição dos argumentos de tal maneira que é eficaz em convencer e persuadirConselho Nacional de Pesquisa e Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico - CNPqapplication/pdfhttp://tede2.pucsp.br/tede/retrieve/51884/Luisiana%20Ferreira%20Moura%20Ribeiro.pdf.jpgporPontifícia Universidade Católica de São PauloPrograma de Estudos Pós-Graduados em Língua PortuguesaPUC-SPBrasilFaculdade de Filosofia, Comunicação, Letras e ArtesRetóricaMemóriaDiscurso epistolarRhetoricMemoryEpistolary discourseCNPQ::LINGUISTICA, LETRAS E ARTES::LETRAS::LINGUA PORTUGUESARetórica e memória: estratégias persuasivas no discurso epistolarRhetoric and memory: persuasive strategies in epistolary discourseinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersioninfo:eu-repo/semantics/masterThesisinfo:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessreponame:Biblioteca Digital de Teses e Dissertações da PUC_SPinstname:Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo (PUC-SP)instacron:PUC_SPTEXTLuisiana Ferreira Moura Ribeiro.pdf.txtLuisiana Ferreira Moura Ribeiro.pdf.txtExtracted texttext/plain357555https://repositorio.pucsp.br/xmlui/bitstream/handle/23062/4/Luisiana%20Ferreira%20Moura%20Ribeiro.pdf.txt240c59e83fabea44e4a1f0cb2d01e00bMD54LICENSElicense.txtlicense.txttext/plain;
