Taking into consideration the relevance of the superego to psychoanalysis, the present research had as its goal understanding what is the severity the superego is capable of, severity which is noted by Freud in both melancholy and obsessional neurosis cases. This work focused on Freudian psychoanalysis and as such to reach its goal a brief overview of the history of the superego concept in Freud’s works was attempted in the first chapter. In the following chapter a deeper reading of the works that were deemed as more significant in the historical overview was made in order to determine the role of the superego in the psyche as well as what is the severity that is present in the superego of the melancholic and obsessional neurotics. On the third chapter the movie Black Swan was analyzed through the psychoanalytic lens and through that analysis a discussion was had about the conclusions of the first two chapters
