Resumo: This study presents a characterization of the construction of appearance and its meanings for male older adults that participated in the Mister IPGG contest, Brazil. It is an exploratory and ethnographic case study. The investments in the personal appearance were made throughout life, being intensified by the participation in the contest. The meanings related to their appearances were elegance, tradition, and dignity. The promotion of appearance care and its meanings among male old aged demonstrated itself as an opportunity to create roles, and room for social engagement which were seen as positive attributes by the winners.

Estudio de caso exploratorio y etnográfico. La inversión en la apariencia sucedió a lo largo de la vida, intensificándose con la participación en el concurso. Los significados relacionados a la apariencia eran elegancia, tradición y dignidad. La promoción del cuidado de la apariencia personal y sus significados se presentó como una oportunidad de crear roles, espacios y envolvimiento social en la vejez masculina, atributos que fueron considerados como positivos por los ganadores.Caracterização da construção da aparência e seus significados para homens idosos, visando à participação no concurso de Mister IPGG. Estudo de caso exploratório e de inspiração etnográfica. O investimento na aparência aconteceu ao longo de toda a vida, intensificando-se com a participação no concurso.
