Resumo: This article aims to do a historical rescue on Gerontology, understanding it as a specialty that deals with research on human aging in its multiple dimensions. It is a explanatory qualitative research that utilized bibliographical revision as a research source. As a result, it was possible to identify the existence of multiple aspects within Gerontology, which not only complement each other but also dispute legitimacy in the explanation of what means aging.

As a result, it was possible to identify the existence of multiple aspects within Gerontology, which not only complement each other but also dispute legitimacy in the explanation of what means aging. Este artículo tiene como objetivo hacer un rescate histórico sobre la Gerontología, comprendiéndola como especialidad que trata de la investigación sobre el envejecimiento humano en sus múltiples dimensiones. Se trata de una investigación cualitativa de cuño explicativo que se utilizó de la revisión bibliográfica como fuente de investigación. Como resultado, fue posible identificar la existencia de múltiples vertientes en el interior de la Gerontología, que se complementan, pero que también disputan legitimidad en la explicación de lo que es el envejecer. Este artigo tem como objetivo fazer um resgate histórico sobre a Gerontologia, compreendendo-a enquanto especialidade que trata da investigação sobre o envelhecimento humano em suas múltiplas dimensões. Trata-se de uma pesquisa qualitativa de cunho explicativo que se utilizou da revisão bibliográfica como fonte de pesquisa.
