Resumo: The aim of the study was to analyze the marital dissolution in the elderly population during the period from 2002 to 2011, through data collection from Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística (IBGE). The number of elderly who resorted to marital dissolution, added separations and divorces, increased 136.1% in the period, exceeding the growth rate of the elderly population, occurring in all age groups of elderly. Thus, governmental, social and political measures should be developed and introduced briefly to minimize these findings, because these breakups can adversely affect the quality of life of older people, reaching their immediate family and the society.
