Resumo: This research sought to comprehend the narratives of illness in a group of elderly people diagnosed with some type of cancer, living in the city of São Paulo, SP, and attached to a health plan in said city. Through semi-structured interviews, a total of 14 people was interviewed, being divided equally between men and women. By their reasoning, it can be observed that cancer is still a stigmatizing disease, associated with death. The importance of social, cultural, religious and psychological aspects in dealing with the disease, as well as a rich therapeutic itinerary, were highlighted.

Esta investigación tuvo como objetivo capturar las narrativas de enfermedades de un grupo de personas mayores diagnosticadas con algún tipo de cáncer, que viven en la ciudad de São Paulo, SP, vinculadas a planes de salud en la misma ciudad. A través de entrevistas semiestructuradas, se escucharon 14 personas, divididas equitativamente entre hombres y mujeres. A partir de las narraciones se puede observar que el cáncer sigue siendo una enfermedad estigmatizante, asociada con la muerte. Se destacó la importancia de los aspectos sociales, culturales, religiosos y psicológicos para hacer frente a la enfermedad, así como un rico itinerario terapéutico.Esta pesquisa procurou apreender as narrativas de adoecimento de um grupo de pessoas idosas diagnosticadas com algum tipo de câncer, moradoras na cidade de São Paulo, SP, e vinculadas a planos de saúde na mesma cidade. Mediante entrevistas semiestruturadas, foram ouvidas 14 pessoas, paritariamente divididas entre homens e mulheres. Pelas falas, pode-se observar que o câncer ainda é uma doença estigmatizante, associada à morte. A importância de aspectos sociais, culturais, religiosos e psicológicos no enfrentamento da doença, bem como um rico itinerário terapêutico, foram destacados.
