Psychoeducation for elderly patients: example of methodology

Resumo: We aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of an eight-session intervention on knowledge and attitudes towards hypertension. 64 elderly who declared themselves as having hypertension participated. 35 participated in the experimental groups and 29 participated in the control groups. Control participants received training after the post test. The protocol contained a socio-demographic questionnaire which included clinical variables, the Hypertension Knowledge Questionnaire (HKQ) and a questionnaire about attitudes and awareness regarding the use of antihypertensive medications. The experimental group showed better knowledge about hypertension, attitudes and awareness regarding the use of antihypertensive drugs, compared to the control group after the intervention. There was no difference in the values of blood pressure. Results documented the feasibility of an educational intervention allied to cognitive training to help with the management of chronic health conditions among older adults.

Participaram 64 idosos que se declararam como hipertensos; 35 participaram do grupo experimental (GE) e 29 do grupo controle (GC). Participantes do GC receberam treino após o pós-teste. O protocolo utilizado conteve questionários que incluíram dados sociodemográficos e clínicos, medidas de pressão arterial, Questionário de Conhecimento sobre a Hipertensão (QCH), e um questionário sobre atitudes, e conscientização, a respeito de medicamentos anti-hipertensivos. O GE apresentou maior conhecimento acerca da hipertensão, atitudes mais positivas e melhor conscientização em relação ao uso dos fármacos anti-hipertensivos, quando comparado ao GC após a intervenção. Não houve diferença quanto aos valores de PA após a intervenção.
