Resumo: This overview article undertakes a survey of the punctuation system in the West from both diachronic and synchronic points of view. Punctuation is defined as the system of graphic signs developed through the centuries as complementary to the Greeks and Latins. With invention of the printing in the Middle Ages, the diffusion of the complementary system received and additional impetus whose impact is felt even today. An examination of the Portuguese graphic system is followed by a discussion of its complexity as well as its internal contradictions. the graphic-spatial aspects of punctuation are also discussed, alongside the problem of pagination.

Procuramos esclarecer como as marcas gráficas da pontuação foram desenvolvidas na história, bem como discutir o estatuto lingüístico da pontuação, enquanto sistema de signos complementares à informação alfabética de nossa escrita. Abordamos a origem da pontuação na Antigüidade Clássica, o modo como foi introduzida no sistema de escrita e como era usada pelos gregos e latinos. Enfocados a difusão da pontuação como sistema de uso obrigatório, com o advento da imprensa na Idade Média, e seus usos da Idade Moderna aos dias de hoje. Analisamos a pontuação no sistema gráfico do português, discutindo sua complexidade e contradições, como sistema plantado na confluência dos domínios oral e escrito. A seguir, buscamos uma definição de Pontuação, revendo suas propriedades e funções, à luz de fundamentos lingüísticos.
