Resumo: Religion occupied an important place in the work of Machado de Assis. The article aims to identify the presence of Ecclesiastes in the short story Elogio da vanidade published by the writer from Rio de Janeiro in 1878. This, one of the best-known biblical books in the Bible, deals with themes that reveal the daily life and the ephemerality of human will and life. Machado de Assis expressed, through his characters, problems and philosophical questions vital to the understanding of religion. Through an intertextual analysis work, there is an attempt to bring passages of the tale closer to the messages of the biblical text. Machado reflects on vanity and human vanities. The tale reveals the importance of the Bible for Machado’s literary writing.

Escrito em 1878, Elogio da vaidade revela a presença do Eclesiastes no texto machadiano. O tema da vaidade presente no conjunto da obra machadiana ganhou a companhia do pessimismo e reforçou no escritor um significado negativo da vida. Dom Hugo de Bressane abordou de forma pioneira o tema da religião na obra do escritor fluminense. No limiar do século XXI ocorreu de modo expressivo, o número de trabalhos sobre a religião em Machado. O Eclesiastes, um dos livros bíblicos mais conhecidos, trata de temas que revelam o cotidiano e a efemeridade da vontade e da vida humana. A rotina de trabalho a qual está submetido o homem que labora sol a sol levanta questões em torno do sentido da vida. O esforço humano é associado à fadiga e ao sofrimento.   Machado faz uma reflexão sobre a vaidade e as vanidades humanas.
