Tempora mutantur, et nos mutamur in illis: a Brazilian Franciscan tile between continents, confessions and temporalities

Resumo: The basically identical thirty-seven tile panels in the cloister of San Francisco in Olinda, Pernambuco, and in the convent of San Francisco in Salvador, Bahia, composed of inscriptiones and picturae of emblems from the book (1607) by the Flemish artist Otto van Veen (1556–1629), articulate an understanding of time based on the neo-estoism of the Flemish philosopher Justus Lipsius (1547-1606). However, the motto of the panel Tempora mutantur, et nos mutamur in illis (Times change and we change with them) cites a temporal vision articulated for the first time by the Lutheran pastor Caspar Huberinus (1500-1553) and finalized, exchanging nosque for et nos, by the Latinist and Protestant physician Matthias Borbonius (1566-1629). Thus, the panels document a dispute about the current temporality, between a classical (fatum stoicum) and medieval or a modern understanding, read by us from the Hartmut Rosa´s theoretical approach called acceleration of time. We conclude that the theme of temporality, precisely because of its change in process, was in the 16th (Lipsius), 17th (van Veen) and 18th (panels) centuries a subject that divided the confessions by their distinct emphases on tradition (the past guides the present) and on the word that challenges the status quo (the present opens up to a distinct future).

Sin embargo, el lema del panel Tempora mutantur, et nos mutamur in illis (Los tiempos cambian y nosotros cambiamos con ellos) cita una visión temporal articulada por primera vez por el pastor luterano Caspar Huberinus (1500-1553) y finalizada, intercambiando nosque por et nos, del médico latinista y protestante Matthias Borbonius (1566-1629). Así, los paneles documentan una disputa sobre la temporalidad actual, entre un entendimiento clásico (fatum stoicum) y medieval o moderno, leído por nosotros desde el enfoque teórico de Hartmut Rosa llamado aceleración del tiempo. Concluimos que el tema de la temporalidad, precisamente por su cambio de proceso, fue en los siglos XVI (Lipsius), XVII (van Veen) y XVIII (paneles) un tema que dividía las confesiones por sus distintos énfasis en la tradición (el pasado guía al presente) y en la palabra que desafía el status quo (el presente se abre a un futuro distinto)..Os basicamente idênticos trinta e sete painéis de azulejos no claustro de São Francisco em Olinda, Pernambuco, e no convento de São Francisco em Salvador, Bahia, compostos por inscriptiones e picturae de emblemas do livro Q. Horati Flacci Emblemata (1607), do artista flamengo Otto van Veen (1556–1629), articulam uma compreensão do tempo baseado no neoestoicismo do filósofo flamengo Justus Lipsius (1547-1606). Entretanto, o lema ou moto do painel Tempora mutantur, et nos mutamur in illis (Os tempos mudam e nos mudamos com eles) cita uma visão temporal articulada pela primeira vez pelo pastor luterano Caspar Huberinus (1500-1553) e finalizado, trocando nosque por et nos, pelo latinista e médico protestante Matthias Borbonius (1566-1629). Dessa forma, os painéis documentam uma disputa sobre a temporalidade vigente, entre a temporalidade clássica (fatum stoicum) e medieval e a temporalidade moderna, lida por nós a partir do referencial teórico da aceleração do tempo de Hartmut Rosa.
