Resumo: This article aims to investigate the parable of the lost and found son (Lk 15,11-32), best known as the “prodigal son”, through the method of narrative analysis, demonstrating the centrality of paternal compassion in the pericope. The analysis of the narrator follows Genette’s categories, and the other narrative operators of reading are analyzed through Ska and through Marguerat and Bourquin. Plot was divided into three scenes, which put the characters in relation to the paternal house and to the father himself. In plot, the attitude of “moving by compassion” (v. 20) is configured as the turning point of the narrative, once it initiates a series of transformations that solve the conflict of the intrigue. Lucas builds a set of rereadings and analepses that place the welcoming of the father to the son in a central position. From the accumulation effect built by the use of three parables in a narrative sequence, and from the identification of intradiegetic narrator and narrator, it becomes clear that the narrator’s option is not for the proposal of rejection made by the eldest son, but for the compassion of the father, since Jesus’ own option is to welcome sinners and share his life with them (Lk 15,3).
