Resumo: This paper presents the results of a research2 that investigates the roots of “O amigo da onça”, humor cartoon created by cartoonist Péricles Maranhão (1924-1961) and published in the magazine O Cruzeiro, from 1943 to 1962. The character is one of the most popular gures of Brazilian graphic humor and reveals the daily life of society at that time. The study con rms an information circulated in the news media , but not yet veri ed: whether “O Amigo da Onça” was inspired by the Argentine series “Enemigos del hombre”, by Guillermo Divito (1914-1969) and published from 1938 onwards in the magazine Patoruzú (1936-1977), edited in Buenos Aires. To this end, we started with a comparative study that considers not only the production context of the series, but also the character-characteristics s and the type of humor peculiar to the stories. The theoretical framework comes mainly from two areas: the press and graphic humor.

The theoretical framework comes mainly from two areas: the press and graphic humor. Este artigo apresenta os resultados de pesquisa1 que investiga as raízes de “O amigo da onça”, história em quadrinhos de humor criada pelo desenhista Péricles Maranhão (1924-1961) e publicada na revista O Cruzeiro, de 1943 a 1962. O personagem é uma das guras mais populares do humor grá co brasileiro e revela características do cotidiano da sociedade no período em questão. O estudo corrobora uma informação dada no meio jornalístico, mas que até então não havia sido con rmada: se “O amigo da onça” foi inspirado na série argentina “Enemigos del hombre”, feita por Guillermo Divito (1914-1969) e publicada a partir de 1938 na revista Patoruzú (1936-1977), editada em Buenos Aires. Para isso, partiu-se de um estudo comparativo que considera não apenas o contexto de produção das séries, mas também as características dos personagens e o tipo de humor peculiar às histórias.
