The material principles or bases in early Arabic Hermeticism: a case-study from the Book of the Treasure of Alexander

Resumo: Almost two decades ago, authors as D. Pingree and F. Zimmermann located in works of Arabic Hermeticism the existence of a conception alternative to the one of the four Aristotelian elements. Instead of elements, those works would begin to speak in principles which, in fact, would equate to the processes of transformation of matter. The possible sources would be the works of the first Hermeticism in Arabic language produced from the 9th century onwards, although other contemporaries, like the Mutazilites, also employed those singular notions. Our paper presents the Book of the Treasure of Alexander as study-case, a work that possibly belonged to the first Arabic Hermeticism and which brings indicators of such material principles.

En vez de elementos, estas obras apelarían a principios que, en verdad, equivaldrían a procesos de transformación de la materia. las fuentes probables serían obras de la primera hermética en lengua árabe, producidas a partir del siglo IX, aunque otros estudiosos del mismo período, como loz mutazilitas, también hayan utilizado esas concepciones singulares. Nuestro trabajo presenta como estudio de caso, el Libro del Tesoro de Alejandro, obra que probablemente pertenenció a la primera hermética árabe y que contiene indicaciones de estos principios materiales.Há cerca de duas décadas, autores como D. Pingree e F. Zimmermann localizaram em obras de hermética árabe, a existência de uma concepção alternativa a dos quatro elementos aristotélicos. Em lugar de elementos, essas obras passariam a falar de princípios que, na verdade, equivaleriam aos processos de transformação da matéria. As fontes prováveis seriam as obras da primeira hermética em língua árabe produzidas a partir do século IX embora outros estudiosos do mesmo período, como os mutazilitas, tenham também se valido dessas singulares concepções.
