Os grupos de convivência em Porto Alegre e sua contribuição à garantia de direitos e à autonomia de homens e mulheres idosos: uma aproximação com os centros de idosos em Barcelona

This paper contains the research conducted during the Doctor‟s degree in Social Work at PUCRS‟ Post-Graduation Program, aiming at analyzing how the elder‟s participation in social groups may guarantee their rights and autonomy. It highlights the importance of aging multidimensional comprehension, a worldwide phenomenon that represents one of the biggest worries to developing and developed countries. The research‟s qualitative approach and its dialectical-critical method were chosen, based on entirety, historicity, mediation and conflict categories. The reality explanatory categories consist in: aging and old age; elder‟s right and autonomy guarantee; professional work; participation; group approach with elderly. The data gathering was accomplished in Porto Alegre, comprising elderly groups bound to the Fundação de Assistência Social e Cidadania (FASC), and groups related to the universities, Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS) and Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), from which professionals and elderly were interviewed. Qualitative data were analyzed through content analysis and quantitative data through statistical treatment techniques. It is confirmed that elderly participation in social groups gives them numerous advantages as the social insertion, living and interaction; friendship and affective relationships establishment; new social roles discovery; familiar relationships better comprehension; intergenerational relationships strengthening; the functional capacity keeping; active aging achievement, among others. The importance of group approach as professional intervention strategy is highlighted, aiming at the effective participation of elderly people through full enjoyment of citizenship, allowing the achievement of collective processes that guarantee their autonomy and the execution of their social rights through public social policies, reinforcing the State commitment with the social protection. The study conducted in Barcelona contributed to indentify government and society possible attention alternatives that, saved the particulars, may be mediated to the Brazilian reality.
