A justiça popular e a espetacularização da violência : uma análise sobre o fenômeno dos linchamentos no Maranhão

This research aims to investigate the phenomenon of lynching, more specifically the 22 cases that occurred in the State of Maranhão, the locus of analysis of this study, in the year 2018. Furthermore, from a survey of statistical data, we seek to understand the real profile of the victims, the legitimizing speeches, the performance of the Criminal Justice System, social perceptions, the construction of the public enemy, the target of popular justice, the media manifestations associated with stigmatization, selectivity and secondary criminalization, the cycles of fear from of a scenario of insecurity and institutional (dis)functionality. In addition, to unveil the various relationships undertaken, through an investigative stance, in the context of a possible state omission regarding the confrontation of violence and crime. For this urpose, the material made available by the Maranhense Human Rights Society, which comes from the reports of the Public Security Secretariat and the cases reported by the press, is used as the primary source. The methodological procedures included the use of techniques such as documentary, bibliographic and content analysis to deal with the quantitative and qualitative data extracted from the press sources and from the aforementioned reports.
