Resumo: | This study investigates the phenomenon through which the coronal stops /t/ and /d/, as well as the voiceless velar stop /k/, are converted to the sibilant fricative [s] before the suffixes ia, idade, ismo and ista, all of them beginning with the high vocoid /i/, as for example in dependente depend?n[s]ia, pr?tico prati[s]idade, m?stico misti[s]ismo e mec?niko mecani[s]ista. Such process, known as stop assibilation, has been discussed, in the light of Chomsky and Halle s generative grammar, by authors like Pardal (1977), Villalva (1994) and Mateus & d Andrade (2000). In the present work, the data are analyzed in a morphophonological perspective, in the light of Optimality Theory, via Comparative Markedness Theory (McCarthy, 2003), in search for an explanation that covers the largest number of cases. From the locus-of-violation function LocSIB, the markedness constraint SIB (ASSIBILATION) is assumed, in its old and new versions. Since assibilation is representative of the morphological type of derived environment effect, output-output correspondence relations are taken into account. High ranking of OO-NEWSIB explains the reason why stop assibilation takes place only when its conditions are met by virtue of material from two different morphemes. Non-assibilation in words in which the sequences ti or di are tautomorphemic is the result of Grandfather Effects, where a marked structure is permitted when it is in the input. The opposite ranking, with high-ranking of OO-OLDSIB, allows the comprehension of the underapplication pattern in those forms that do not undergo the process even though, on the surface, they present the adequate structural description to its application. At the end of the study, comparisons with alternatives are sketched, so as to justify the choice made in favor of Comparative Markedness Theory |

At the end of the study, comparisons with alternatives are sketched, so as to justify the choice made in favor of Comparative Markedness TheoryEste estudo investiga o fen?meno pelo qual as plosivas coronais /t/ e /d/, bem como a plosiva velar n?o sonora /k/, passam a fricativa sibilante [s] diante dos sufixos ia, idade, ismo e ista, todos iniciados pela vogal alta /i/, a exemplo de dependente depend?n[s]ia, pr?tico prati[s]idade, m?stico misti[s]ismo e mec?niko mecani[s]ista. Made available in DSpace on 2015-04-14T13:38:30Z (GMT).
