Estruturação e validação de um questionário para diagnóstico de bruxismo do sono mediante dispositivo portátil de eletromiografia

The objective of the present study was to develop a possible diagnostic questionnaire for a reliable bruxism diagnosis and not only for screening. The questionnaire was validated and the results compared with a portable electromyographic diagnostic device (BiteStrip®), which has already been validated against the gold standard, which is polysomnography. We developed and validated a self-administered questionnaire, entitled: "Bruxism Assessment Questionnaire" or BAQ. This study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS). The questionnaire was applied in 50 students of the program in dentistry at PUCRS. This was a self-report questionnaire written in Portuguese, translated into English, composed of 13 items within 5 areas, with a maximum (23 points) and a minimum score (0). The final score, indicating presence or absence of sleep bruxism, was estimated with the sum of the points obtained in all items. The 25th percentile score was defined as the cutoff point indicating the level of bruxism. The statistical indices of sensitivity, specificity, receiver operation characteristic (ROC), positive predictive value, negative predictive value, diagnostic probability ratio, positive likelihood ratio and negative likelihood ratio were evaluated. The results have shown that the best correlation was between the BiteStrip® (0 = no bruxism, and 1,2,3= with bruxism) with the BAQ when the individual socred in more than one area.
