O jornalismo na ótica de seus sujeitos : as gerações porto-alegrenses de 1940 e 1960

The following study presents a historical survey of journalism in Rio Grande do Sul and covers elements that will aid in its sociological understanding based on 19 interviews with journalists from Porto Alegre that started their careers in 1940 and 1960. This study features interviews with Antonio Hohlfeldt, Armando Burd, Carlos Bastos, Célia Ribeiro, Celito De Grandi, Elmar Bones, Flávio Porcello, Geraldo Hasse, J.A. Pinheiro Machado, Jayme Copstein, João Borges De Sousa, Juarez Fonseca, Lucídio Castelo Branco, Ruy Carlos Ostermann, Liberato Vieira da Cunha, Joseph Zukauskas, Jayme Sirotsky, Tânia Carvalho and Walter Galvani. Aiming at presenting a view of the journey this profession went through since the second half of the 20th century up until the 80s, this study uses a bibliography based on the practice of journalism and also on the routine transformations it went through along the years in comparison to the romantic idea of being an adventurous profession. Besides that, this study also works with analysis on information sources and their dynamic with news broadcasters, especially with authors such as Marcondes Filho (2002), Rüdiger (2003), Neveu (2006) and Wolf (2009). The interviews covered themes such as biography, conceptions concerning journalism, relationship with information sources, routine specifications, evaluation of the development of Rio Grande do Sul press and professionals that had an important role in its formation. n conclusion, it is possible to assert that a journalist in the past could carry out their activities in a less restricted way; that the technological advances streamlined the process of collecting information but also made it less necessary for journalists to be present at the places where the news happened; the press organization was divided in sections and editorials that contributed to the standardization of the profession; older reporters went through more challenging processes in their professional education, with less instructions regarding the way tasks should be performed; the relation between journalist and source should be viewed as an ethical necessity and the generation from the 40s lived in a context that provided a more romantic view of the profession whereas the generation of 1960 main characteristic was specialization.
