“Bahia, o palco do nascimento do Brasil” : a consagração das cidades históricas nacionais baianas na ditadura civil-militar (1966-1983)

This thesis has the aim of understanding the process of patrimonialization which a number of different cities in the state of Bahia underwent during the period of rule of the civil-military dictatorship. The cities in question are Porto Seguro, Cachoeira, Lençóis, Rio de Contas, Mucugê, Monte Santo, Santa Cruz Cabrália and the historic center of Salvador. The preservationist discourse in Bahia gained sufficient visibility that it ended up shaping both the discourse of the main political leaderships and the main intellectual agents of the time. In this research, keeping in mind the process of official recognition of clusters of colonial buildings and architectural features as cultural heritage that took place between 1966 and 1983, we can work off of the assumption that the ramifications of the civil-military dictatorship, installed in 1964, contributed to the political demands of the elite of Bahia gaining a prominence compatible with the new conception of urban preservation that was taking hold in the country at the same time.
