Resumo: This article analyses Spanish immigration in Rio de Janeiro between 1880 and 1914. These immigrants were the third biggest foreign colony in the city during that period. The author intends to discuss the idea that foreign urban immigration was in competition with national handwork, mainly those who were settled free after the slavery abolition in 1888.
