Resumo: The article is an historical account of the application of the laws of    citizenship and naturalization of foreigners in Brazil during the first half of the twentieth century. The work is the result of the analysis of Brazilian constitutions and federal laws, concerning citizenship and a number of naturalizations process recorded in the corresponding files of the Ministry of Justice and Internal Affairs at the National Archives in Rio de Janeiro. The Syrians and Lebanese immigrants who enter Brazil in the beginning of last century were the chosen community to illustrate this paper. At the end, we make available a list of Arab immigrants’ naturalization files throughout the country taken from the National Archive containing several information about each person on its place of residence.
