Resumo: The text discusses the abolition festivals in the Republic and the political disputes around its meaning. Modern Rio de Janeiro gave space to the suburbs in celebration of celebrations, except those held in the Irmandade do Rosário. Abolition becomes a symbol of dispute and re-signified by rulers and lawyers, witnesses of the law in 1888.   Keywords: celebrations; abolition; press; ex-slaves.
